about

Daytym’s fourth studio album, ‘Born Legend’, fully produced by Minneapolis artist Nick Tezla, is a so-long to the rappers former musical identity. Titled in honor of his Grandfather, pro wrestler Verne Gagne, and Father, pro wrestler Larry Zybzsko, the intense and charismatic album pays tribute to his most powerful and early influences.

In his mind, a transition needed to take place. Being so involved in rap music, and attempting tirelessly to break his way in the the cliquey, manipulative, and corrupted hip-hop industry for nearly a decade, guided him towards a revelation. Not before driving him insane, however.

The first four tracks encapsulate these feelings of complacency and frustration. Knowing that he had to let go of his former image, he would need to purge the remain energy he had left into these tracks. A life of crime on the road builds up many barriers to be torn down; it leaves many gaps in the spirit to be filled as well. Thus, Daytym molded these feelings into songs like ‘Ultraviolet’ and ‘Tyrant’.

“The sex and drugs and mostly violence that plagues hip-hop music is dismembering the culture from within by destroying the image of blacks in America.” He said with a noticeable disdain. Even though he admits to manufacturing and trafficking drugs for several years, Daytym, fed up with all of the vulgarity of rap, pledged to himself never to write about subject matter that may perpetuate bad decision making in his young listeners, and from there on out, to create music only about love and hardship.

The finally four tracks represent Daytym’s true artistic-self for more.. The song ’The Name’ specifically touches on the emotional effect the industry has had on him. After a decade of making music that he felt no longer represents him as an artist. He also deals with some very personal romantic unravelings as well, which he learns to target in a poetic and story-lead format, much more similar to his roots.

To finish the album, ‘Payday’ brings everything together with a triumphant burst of light, reassuring Daytym, and his audience, that there is nothing in the way of true success, now that he has purged his demons and learned how to forgive himself. Unlike other projects from the Midwest rapper, if you listen closely, you can learn a lot about the artist, and find many relatable aspects tin his vision. “ I just want to find people who feel the love in my music. Even if its a sad or hopeless song, I need people to know I still have all this love inside of me. To share.”

Daytym spent all of his time alone, writing. Like most teenagers from a broken home, he quickly discovered his knack for causing trouble, yet always gravitated towards music as a way to keep balance in his life.
